The First General Meeting of the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP) was organized in Rabat, the capital of Morocco for three days from 26 to 28 June, 2018. Approximately 220 participants from central and local governments from 32 African countries, various public agencies, private enterprises and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) shared information and knowledge regarding solid waste management.
On the first day, Moroccan officials shared progress of and knowledge gained through implementation of national programs and strategies of municipal solid waste management in the morning session. In the afternoon, the participants visited the transfer station in Sale and the waste landfilling and valorization center in Oum Azza.
On the second day, there were two main topics; i.e., data collection for sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially SDG Indicator 11.6.1, 12.4.2 and 12.5.1*, and Public Private Partnership. In addition, result of the stakeholder and problem analysis based on the data collected at the preparatory meeting in Maputo and waste treatment technologies of several Japanese enterprises were presented.
On the third day, financial issues such as how to promote investment in waste management in Africa were discussed, and progress of ACCP activities and plans toward TICAD 7 to be held in 2019 were presented. At the end of the conference, Rabat Declaration was adapted unanimously among the participants to confirm carrying out further efforts for realizing appropriate solid waste management under the ACCP framework.
